January 8, 1916. Today in Ottoman history, the Allied forces fully retreated from the shores of the Gallipoli peninsula, ending a disastrous invasion attempt of the Ottoman Empire. The Gallipoli campaign resulted in 250,000 Allied casualties and greatly discredited Allied military command. Winston Churchill resigned his post as First Lord of the Admiralty and was demoted to an obscure cabinet post as a direct result of the failure.
